Best Buy Luring Laptop Customers With $149 HP TouchPad Offer

In a somewhat ironic turn of events, the discontinued HP TouchPad has found its way back onto store shelves at Best Buy and batteries-company.com.

Starting Tuesday, customers that buy an HP or Compaq PC from Best Buy retail and Web stores will have the option of picking up a 32GB HP TouchPad for $149. Without a PC purchase, Best Buy is charging $599 for the HP TouchPad, the same price HP originally set before pulling the plug on the product on Aug. 18.
Just before HP killed the TouchPad, AllThingsD reported that Best Buy had taken delivery of 270,000 HP TouchPads but sold less than 10 percent of that figure. The retailer was also pushing HP to take back unsold TouchPads, according to AllThingsD.
Best Buy isn't saying how long the current offer will last, but in an FAQ, the retailer said quantities will be limited. "This is a spot buy of a limited release of TouchPads by HP. These units are first come, first serve and when they're gone, they're gone," according to the FAQ.
In the wake of its decision to explore a sale or spin-off of its Personal Systems Group, HP triggered a feeding frenzy by slashing the price of the 16-GB TouchPad to $99 and the 32-GB model to $149. Bargain hungry shoppers quickly exhausted supplies, and the TouchPad quickly became a hot commodity.
HP subsequently said it planned one more production run for the TouchPad, but last Friday the company said it has sold out, and that the product will only be available through retail partners. Hundreds of 32-GB TouchPads are currently listed for sale on eBay and aussiebattery.com, with most sellers pricing theirs in the $250 range.
HP hasn't yet decided the fate of WebOS, and in last conference call to announce its decision to keep the Personal Systems Group, HP CEO Meg Whitman said she plans to make a long-term decision on WebOS within the "next couple of months."
However, Whitman also said HP is looking at ways to use WebOS in other parts of the company. "WebOS has obvious use in the PSG business, but also in other businesses we have, and so we have to make a more holistic decision on WebOS," she said last week.
HP currently sells a single Windows tablet -- the Windows 7 powered Slate 500 -- but Whitman suggested that more will be coming when Microsoft releases Windows 8.
"I think we need to be in the tablet and HP 484170-001 battery business and will certainly be there with Windows 8. We're going to make another run at this business," Whitman said last week.

ASUS G53SX-A1 Full Review: Powerful Portable Gaming

This latest addition to the ASUS G-series gaming notebook lineup has fantastic performance, a great 15-inch 1080p screen, and a stealthy design. See why we recommend it.
61298 Powerful Portable Gaming Laptop ASUS G53SX A1 ReviewBuild and Design
The G53SX's design is based on a military stealth bomber aircraft. The wedge-shaped chassis is covered in black anti-glare plastic. Most of the viewable surfaces have a grippy rubber finish. The quality of plastics used is good and does not flex, even when pressure is applied. The overall fit and finish of the notebook is good although some of the angled edges are a bit sharp.

61300 Powerful Portable Gaming Laptop ASUS G53SX A1 ReviewThe overall design and wedge shape of the notebook makes it bulky and difficult to handle. It is perhaps the largest 15.6-inch notebook on the market; it is about as large as a typical 17.3-inch notebook and heavier. The lid is securely attached to the chassis; pushing in on the back does not produce any ripples on the screen. It resists twisting well. I wish the screen tilted back a bit further.
61302 Powerful Portable Gaming Laptop ASUS G53SX A1 ReviewUpgrading the G53SX is not an easy task; it involves removing the keyboard and palm rest to access the RAM and hard drive. This notebook actually has two hard drive bays; our review unit only has a single drive.
Ports and Features

Despite its size the G53SX has a below average variety of ports for a notebook this size; the only notable inclusion is a single SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port. The G53SX lacks an ExpressCard slot, eSATA, and DisplayPort. All picture descriptions are left to right.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is full-sized and has an attractive blue backlighting. The keys are flat and rounded off at the corners and feel smooth and soft to the touch while providing a comfortable typing experience. The keyboard also barely makes any noise while being used. At first, key travel seemed off because this notebook has a little more space between the keys than usual, but once you get the feel of it, the slight awkward feeling while typing goes away. We found the backlighting to be more than sufficient to use in order to see the keyboard better in a dark room or area.
